Lakeside follows the "boomerang" program in which everything your child brings for snack and lunch will return home with them a great way to reduce garbage and litter as well as providing you information on what they have eaten!

A new website is now available for the parents of Ontario's elementary school children. The site, called abc123, gives parents practical ideas on fun and everyday ways to help their children with reading, writing and math. It features easy-to-read tip lists and provides other valuable resources parents can use to help their children.

Parents can also find out what the government is doing to reach every student in a section called "How We're Helping"

School Climate Survey Results

Research shows that there is a direct link between students’ success and the school environment in which learning takes place.  Students are more motivated to do well and to realize their full potential in schools that have a positive school climate, where they feel safe and supported.

Safe schools Action Team, Shaping a Culture of Respect in Our Schools: Promoting Safe and Healthy Relationships, 2008, p.1

The Durham District School Board and Lakeside Public School are working to ensure safe learning environments for all.  We share a commitment to provide a safe learning environment for all students.

In February, 2010, mandatory School Climate Surveys were introduced by the Ministry of Education as part of the Safe Schools Strategy.  School Climate Surveys provide a snapshot of student perception on a variety of topics related to how welcome and safe students feel in their school, including bullying within the school.  As part of  Lakeside Public School commitment to providing a safe, learning environment, for our students, our Safe Schools Team will use the data from the School Climate Survey to assess our success and to guide future initiatives and practice here at Lakeside Public School.

When the Safe Schools Team reviewed the data at Lakeside Public School the following highlights became apparent:

1. When the students are at school the vast majority of the students indicated :

  • Students feel safe
  • Students are friendly
  • Students treat others with respect
  • Students feel they belong
  • I am  a good student or could be a better student
  • Are expected to do good work
  • Behave well
  • Have lots of friends

2. A great majority of our students feel welcomed at Lakeside.

3. A significant number of our students feel very safe or safe in the lunchroom, washrooms, classrooms, gym, change rooms, school buses, school grounds, school entrances/exits, hallways, locker areas and neighborhood.

4.  Our students feel safe walking to and from school.

5.  A significant number of our students have indicated they have not bullied others or taken part in group bullying.

6.  The students at Lakeside have reported bullying to their parents, other children and the principal/vice principal.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss the results of our School climate Survey and the subsequent Safe Schools Action Plan at our next SCC meeting on January 24th at 7:00 p.m. You can find additional information about our Safe Schools strategy on the DDSB’s website at www.durham.edu.on.ca/parent resources/safe schools. We are better together.
